SDCC 2019: First Clip From Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal

by Tito W. James

Primal is the new adult animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack). The story follows a caveman and a dinosaur, Spear and Fang, trying to survive in a harsh primordial world. In the clip we see Spear trying to defend Fang’s dinosaur cubs from a T-rex attack.

Studio La Cachette (Sucker of Souls) really outdid themselves by making the rough linework convey fluid motion. The background colors by art director Scott Wills help all the characters read, even during the intense action. The sound design is also superb, which is essential seeing as this ten-episode limited series will consist entirely of non-verbal storytelling.

While the violence is exciting, Primal will also communicate a full story rooted in human emotion. This show will change the face of animated TV if we let it.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal airs this fall on Adult Swim.
