Atsushi Kaneko Brings Underground Comix Aesthetics To Manga
by Tito W. James

While I do love anime and manga, one major complaint I have is that they tend to be stylistically homogenous. Apparently, I’m not alone in this feeling because Mangaka (Manga Artist) Atsushi Kaneko takes heavy influence from Western underground comix to create a totally unique vision in manga.

This is the cover for Kaneko’s new manga Search and Destroy which is a reinterpretation of Osamu Tezuka’s Dororo. As a fan of Dororo and Kaneko’s art, this is a manga I can’t wait to see translated into English. Kaneko is a great example of an artist who has been able to find success by drawing what he enjoys as opposed to drawing what he thinks will sell.
