Why Luther Is A Better Batman Show Than Gotham

by Tito W. James

After watching the final season of Gotham and latest season of Luther I’ve come to the conclusion that Luther does a better job at mixing crime with pulpy characters.

Gotham does have it’s moments and the actors give some entertaining performances as the Penguin, Riddler, and Joker. However, Gotham is just a blood-soaked cartoon that has more in common with Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher’s Batman than Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight.

Luther on the other hand maintains a sense of gritty realism with believable characters and dialogue. That is not to say Luther is a straight edged crime show. Detective John Luther (Idris Elba) is a genius investigator with anger issues who will often commit crimes to catch bizarre criminals.

Another key component of the Luther series is the character of Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). Alice is basically a yandere, she’ll help Luther solves cases while also leaving a trail of bodies behind her.

Luther is appeals to the more mature aspects of the Dark Knight trilogy. The writing is sharp, smart, and believable. So if you’re like me and are sick of goofy superheroes and want a gritty realistic story with a hint of the fantastic, then Luther is a must watch.

All five seasons are available now on BBC America.
