The Frankenstein Legend is Given New Life In ‘The Empire of Corpses’

by Tito W. James

The Empire of Corpses follows a young British doctor who’s sent to recover the lost research of Victor Frankenstein from a Russian agent gone rogue. The story takes place in an alternate history where zombies are used in everyday life like servants or soldiers. It’s basically like a Ghost in the Shell if you replace the Artificial Intelligence with the undead.

The animation in The Empire of Corpses is gorgeous and grounded– nailing the action set-pieces as well as the atmospheric storytelling. The film has many unexpected twists and turns that I don’t want to spoil. If you enjoy radical anime renterpriations of supernatural characters like Castlevania, Hellsing, or Vampire Hunter D, then I highly recommend The Empire of Corpses.
